Hopkins is widely recognized as the cultural heart of the Garifuna people in Belize. Long before the modern village was established, the surrounding area was home to ancient Maya communities, with archaeological sites and mounds still found near the Sittee River.
The modern story of Hopkins begins with the Garifuna people, descendants of West and Central Africans and Indigenous Arawak and Carib peoples. After exile from St. Vincent in the late 1700s, Garifuna communities settled along the Caribbean coast of Central America, including Belize.
Hopkins grew significantly after a 1941 hurricane destroyed the nearby settlement of Newtown, prompting residents to relocate and rebuild. Today, Hopkins remains a welcoming coastal village known for its fishing heritage, Garifuna language, music, cuisine, and relaxed Caribbean rhythm.
